Sundowns Dismantle Remo Stars in Abeokuta to Take Commanding CAF Champions League Lead

South African heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a masterclass in Abeokuta, crushing Remo Stars 5–1 to put one foot in the CAF Champions League group stage.

Mamelodi Sundowns demonstrated their class and continental pedigree on Sunday with a dominant 5–1 victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars in the first leg of their CAF Champions League 2025/26 second preliminary round encounter in Abeokuta.

The South African champions wasted no time asserting their authority. Barely 10 minutes into the contest, Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring, punishing a defensive lapse from the Nigerian side. The early goal silenced the home supporters and set the tone for a long afternoon for the Sky Blue Stars.

Before Remo Stars could regroup, Peter Shalulile doubled Sundowns’ advantage with a clinical finish, ensuring the visitors went into the break with a commanding 2–0 lead.

The second half brought no relief for the hosts. Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho struck in the 61st minute to make it three, capitalizing on Sundowns’ high pressing and superior movement. Brazilian forward Arthur Sales and midfielder Tsiki Ntsabeleng added further goals as the South Africans ran riot in Ikenne, displaying sharp finishing and tactical superiority.

Remo Stars managed a late consolation when Samson Olasupo converted in the 77th minute, but it did little to change the narrative of a one-sided contest.

With a 5–1 cushion heading into the second leg in Pretoria, coach Miguel Cardoso and his men look poised to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage, continuing their mission to reclaim African club football’s most prestigious title.

For Remo Stars, it was a humbling reminder of the gap between established continental powerhouses and Nigeria’s emerging challengers. They will need a near-miraculous turnaround in South Africa to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
